Having been at the bank for a quarter of a century, Commonwealth Bank Executive Manager - Consumer Finance, Jaimie Gordon F FIN, has spent time in a huge variety of roles.
“I’ve worked in fund accounting, structured finance, product management in commercial lending and data analytics. I also had the opportunity to do a stint in Indonesia with CBA in international financial services,” says Jaimie, who is based at CBA’s head office in South Everleigh in Sydney.
“The good thing about being with such a large corporation is the opportunity to move around. I’m in consumer finance now, in the retail banking space. It’s really exciting because it’s constantly changing and evolving,” he says.
Jaimie says his time working in Indonesia from 2006 to 2010 was a fantastic experience.
“I was lucky to get the opportunity to work overseas because CBA is mainly a domestic bank. When I went over, I had just been married and I knew I wanted to work in Asia. I started on a six-month contract and ended up being over there for about four-and-a-half years and we had our two children there.”
Although Jaimie has recently re-joined FINSIA, his association with the institute goes back 20 years when he completed his Master of Applied Finance through the Securities Institute of Australia.
“I’m looking forward to connecting with like-minded people and gaining a broader understanding of what’s happening in banking and finance,” says Jaimie.
He’s also planning to make the most of FINSIA’s webinars and networking events and says his membership will help support him in his role.
“Consumer finance is constantly changing and, at the same time, we’re dealing with legacy systems and competition from fintechs. So it's a really interesting space from a product and technology point of view. Being a FINSIA member will help me connect with people facing similar challenges,” Jaimie says.
Outside work, Jaimie says his priorities are the five Fs – family, friends, fitness, flying and photography.
“I focus on these things every year. My daughter is also doing the HSC and my son is the year behind her, so getting the kids through the HSC and into uni after that is a big focus for the family at the moment,” he says.
