People considering a career in banking should undertake FINSIA’s Chartered Banker programme
The course will deepen their skill set and provide specific skills that are unique to the Banking industry.
That’s the view of Regional Australia Bank chief risk officer Campbell Nicoll who spoke to FINSIA about his journey through the Chartered Banker by Experience course.

1.Which part of the course was of the most benefit and of most interest, and why?
I found the self-reflection statements the most beneficial in that most people do not have the opportunity to take stock and reflect on how their careers have evolved. These statements forced me to reflect on how my career has evolved and how key events shaped
2. Was the fast-track “by experience” method rather than a coursework study approach the reason you actually took the course? And do you see the value of doing the Chartered Banker by study for those who do not meet the experience requirements?
Whilst having my career recognised as a factor in this course it was not the major driver. Banking as a profession is quite different to other professions in that to be successful we need to ensure that the customers interests are respected as well as the Banks which means a Banker has more than one interested party. Given these competing demands there is the need for good quality courses to assist Bankers develop deeper skills. The Chartered Banker programme is unique and I would encourage people who are looking for a career in Banking to undertake the Chartered Banking programme as it will deepen their skill set and provide specific skills that are unique to the Banking industry.
3. How far towards the obligations of the Banking Executive Accountability Regime does CBBE go - and why? And if not, why?
The CBBE certainly helps a Banker in bringing customer outcomes to the fore through the professional ethics assignment. I found this assignment very interesting in that it allowed me to apply different ethical models to real events. This assignment focuses on providing Bankers with the tools to ‘do the right thing’ which is what BEAR regime is trying to enforce.
4. Do you have any tips for students embarking on the course.
Have an open mind and explore your experiences in detail. People rarely get the opportunity to reflect on people and events that have helped mould them into who they have become. The first part of the course certainly allows a participant to do exactly that. With the Ethics assignment you should read books and articles outside of the course work as this will allow you to reference a much wider range of opinions. I found this additional research invaluable in constructing the framework of my Professional Ethics Assignment.
With regards word count these assignments require a participant to be direct and to the point. Therefore constructing your assignments to flow naturally will require time. Therefore the timeframes provided by Chartered Banker need to be followed otherwise your will be under pressure to get the assignments completed.
